There are likely to be many other plant natural products that remain undiscovered or under-exploited, and research from The John Innes Centre, which is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), is uncovering more about the genetics and evolution of natural product pathways in plants. Researchers at JIC have recently discovered that the genes producing two of these products in the model plant Arabidopsis are clustered together, which is extremely rare in plants. An apparent 'evolutionary playground' in the plant's genome seems to have brought the genes together, and knowing how these clusters assemble and are controlled will be important for improving and exploiting the production of new natural products.
Gene clusters are common in bacteria, where genes needed to perform a specific task, such as producing an antibiotic, are grouped together in what are called operons. However in plants and animals, functionally related genes are normally spread throughout the genome. Professor Anne Osbourn of the John Innes Centre, whilst studying a natural antimicrobial compound produced by oats, found that the genes that made this compound were in fact clustered. Her group used the 'signature' of these genes' arrangement to search for other potential clusters, in the model plant Arabidopsis.
Publishing in the journal Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, Professor Osbourn and her colleagues at Stanford University and France's Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) have now discovered the second of two gene clusters, both producing triterpene compounds. This allows them to look for common features of the gene clusters, giving new insights into how these clusters evolve.
Bacterial operons swap relatively easily between species, but the Arabidopsis gene clusters didn't enter the plant's genomes by this route. Both of the clusters are found in 'dynamic' regions of the genome that are significantly enriched in transposable elements. These areas act like 'evolutionary playgrounds' where recombinations happen more frequently, bringing together different genes. When the gene clusters produce compounds that are useful to the plant, for example in fighting off pests, natural selection favours these clusters. Crucially, in both of the triterpene gene clusters found by the group, the clusters must be maintained as a whole. Losing one part of the cluster leads to the build up of toxic intermediates. This causes an evolutionary pressure to maintain the cluster as a whole, as this increases the chances of the all of the genes being inherited together.
Clustering also allows the genes to be controlled in a coordinated manner, and comparing the gene clusters gave the scientists hints of how this might happen. Both gene clusters show signs that they are regulated by the way the DNA molecule folds or unfolds into chromatin, whilst neighbouring genes outside the clusters don't. Furthermore, it appears that this level of coordinated gene expression has been acquired by the cluster after its assembly.
These insights into the way these gene clusters have evolved and function will be particularly valuable for efforts to fully exploit the potential of plants to produce valuable products. Last week I was asked the question by a client prospect, ?so how many retreats will we be doing as part of the strategic planning process??.? That got me to thinking about just how many of these retreats are probably happening in hotels across the U.S. this fall. Strategic planning retreats are a joke in terms of producing meaningful strategic plans, yet every year companies go through this ritualistic planning process.? These retreats are usually held over a long weekend or two and are essentially a leadership caucus brimming with tedious reviews of the previous year?s plan, sometimes some budgeting and always a lot of hotel food and cookies from the snack platter.
The problem is, virtually all of these so called strategy retreats provide very little value in terms of desired strategic planning outcomes.? Sure, you will gain a few pounds and miss your son?s football game, but will you have an actual strategic plan?? You know that you are experiencing this rut and are probably in big trouble when you have to ask your administrative assistant to locate a soft copy of last year?s plan and reprint it beforehand so that you can prepare enough to go to the planning retreat and not look silly.? All of this effort and expense yields take-aways like PowerPoint slide decks, some spreadsheets guaranteed to produced eye strain and cute strategy slogans that you can?t exactly recall the meaning of afterwards or how to explain it to your management team by Monday.
Real strategic planning produces truly actionable work product.? It involves a thorough review of the existing strategy, coupled with a hard look at the organization?s results on the operational execution to the current plan?but there is so much more that should be involved.? Where is the analysis behind the plan hatched over the weekend at the Four Seasons? (As a side note, the Four Seasons is a lovely resort.)
What About These Planning Omissions?
Did the management team do a current-state analysis that included a review of the enterprise ecosystem, competitive analysis, contingency (scenario) planning and culture / hierarchy analysis? ? all while munching on cookies in Banquet Room-A? Were strategic goals decomposed into all of the supporting initiatives that will be important have fully mapped-out in detail (something resembling project plans)?
Were measurable goals, metrics, accountabilities set in place for the coming year and even further out on the planning horizon? Are required resources, timelines and responsibility now fully understood?? All of these planning components matter a great deal.
Don?t get me wrong.? There is definitely value to holding management retreats, but more from a team building perspective. Unfortunately, most companies are repeating the same common planning mistakes each year, leading to strategic plans that are less than effective and fail to meet to their full potential. These strategic planning ?mis-adventures? follow what we refer to as the ?traditional? approach.? In traditional planning, the staff that are affected by the plans produced are often unaware of what organizational goals have been established and have only been given ?need-to-know? levels of information to carry out their own relative goals.? They may see information emailed to them containing the cute slogan and then be asked to enter some personal goals in to the company?s performance management system that will be their measuring stick for the coming year ? boring and ineffective.
There is usually a team or set of teams that have been given the ?go ahead? to carry out the ?plans?, but they often fall prey to their own reactions to change occurring within the business environment that are magnified in impact due to the lack of adequate planning in place to counter those tendencies. Traditional planning is typically a mixed academic and artistic exercise that is done annually. In most cases, traditional planning is conducted from the top-down and does not penetrate deep enough into operational layer where the tactical implementations of goal-supporting initiatives are planned. Worse yet, there usually is not enough ?meat on them bones? to really do much of anything with the magic binder of strategy.
Sorry to have to say it, but strategy, vision and cathartic brilliance take more time to create than the weekend planning retreat can produce and corporate strategy deserves more.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? BP Plc has paid out more than $5 billion to 204,434 victims of last year's massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill, fund administrator Kenneth Feinberg said on Tuesday.
The payouts amount to roughly 25 percent of the $20 billion fund, known as the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, which was set up a year ago following the April 2010 spill.
So far, 947,892 claims have been filed from all 50 U.S. states and residents of 36 countries. Nearly all of the successful claimants come from four states: Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.
"I point with pride to the progress we've made in the past year," Feinberg said via telephone in a news conference on Tuesday. "We are doing exactly what the (Obama) administration and BP intended when the fund was set up."
In addition to the $5 billion paid to claimants, the fund has spent another $1.7 billion on cleanup efforts, government claims and other expenses, Feinberg said.
CRITICISM
While the fund touts its work, Feinberg and BP face persistent criticism from individuals, several state attorneys general and community groups who believe payouts are being made too slowly and that some spill victims with valid claims are being turned away.
Critics also contend that the fund is pressuring claimants to accept small amounts now, in exchange for their agreement not to sue BP and its partners later for more.
Feinberg acknowledged problems on Tuesday. "The program is not perfect, but we have made improvements and will continue to fine-tune it going forward," he said.
Lawyers handling litigation for hundreds of individuals and businesses in the federal court in New Orleans say victims might be better-served by suing BP and its partners.
In a July 25 court filing, they asked presiding U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier to appoint a special master to oversee the BP fund's activities, saying the claims process violates the federal Oil Pollution Act.
In July, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood sued Feinberg to force the release of documents filed by claimants in that state. Hood said he wants to ensure that claimants are being compensated fairly. Private parties have filed several other lawsuits against Feinberg and the fund.
FEINBERG DEFENDS FUND
BP and Feinberg say the Gulf Coast Claims Facility's activities comply with the law. In an August 18 court filing, Feinberg said federal courts have no power to oversee the claims process, and that a special master would cause "confusion and delay."
"Any reasonable, objective person genuinely interested in the welfare of those damaged by the spill would acknowledge and commend the extraordinary scope and speed of (the fund's) accomplishments," Feinberg said.
Anthony Buzbee, a Houston-based lawyer not among those calling for a special master, says he has settled 18 of 19 personal injury claims filed with the fund, for an average of $5 million each. He says he has also settled several hotel claims for more than $5 million each, and has 12,000 other pending claims for clients, including shrimpers, oystermen and property owners.
Barbier has set a February 2012 trial date for those pursuing lawsuits against BP and other defendants. This date also covers a lawsuit against BP by the U.S. Department of Justice alleging civil violations for environmental damage.
