Republican Perry chides Romney, defends Texas actions (Reuters)
CONCORD, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? Texas Governor Rick Perry renewed his attack on Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney as untrustworthy, and defended Texas illegal immigration policy that has been criticized by conservative Republicans.
Campaigning in New Hampshire, Perry accused the former Massachusetts governor of changing positions on gun control, the causes of global warming and government health insurance mandates.
He is seeking to chip away at Romney's big lead in the polls in a key early primary state, and arrest his own slide in national surveys.
"Like it or not the governor has been on the opposite side of a lot of issues," Perry said during a live interview with conservative activist and New Hampshire Republican gubernatorial candidate Ovide Lamontagne. "The issue is who are you really going to trust to stand up and be consistent?"
The Romney and Perry camps have focused their criticism on each other on Friday rather than businessman Herman Cain who now leads in some national Republican polls, an indication that neither campaign views Cain as a serious threat.
Also piling on Romney on Friday was former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, who is preparing to make a four-day campaign swing through New Hampshire.
"Real leadership is taking a clear position on issues even if it comes at political risk. Backflipping is for toys and gymnasts, not presidents," the Huntsman campaign said in a new web video.
Perry, who briefly led in national polls after entering the Republican race in August, has faded after a string of shaky performances in candidate debates.
In Concord on Friday he sought deflect criticism from Romney and Tea Party conservative activists who accuse him of being soft on illegal immigration.
Perry signed a bill that allowed Texas residents without legal U.S. resident status to attend Texas colleges, while paying in-state tuition. The bill passed the Texas legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support.
"We could kick these people to the side of the road and then we'll have to pick up the costs of whatever those social programs they're going to be eligible for," he said. "We're going to either have tax wasters or tax payers."
Perry's campaign also chided Romney for allowing people without proof of citizenship to access health care programs for the poor while governor of Massachusetts, an indication of how strongly the illegal immigration issue is resonating with Republican primary voters.
Romney campaign spokesman Andrea Saul termed Perry "desperate" in an emailed response.
He "will try anything to deflect attention away from his liberal policy on in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and his advocacy for turning Social Security over to the states," Saul said.
At a town hall meeting in Manchester on Friday evening, Romney focused on President Barack Obama rather than Perry, saying Obama as trying to "divide America into haves and have nots" and invite a "very dangerous" brand of class divisions.
The Texas governor, who has indicated he may skip some of the remaining Republican debates, joked about his debating shortfalls and sought to minimize the importance of debate performances.
"Shoot, I may be a great debater before it's all over," he said. "We have a very very good debater and a slick politician in the White House right now, and it's not working."

PERTH, Australia (AP) ? Commonwealth government leaders meeting in Australia agreed Saturday to step up efforts to eradicate polio worldwide, despite the Afghanistan war setting back vaccination efforts there and in neighboring Pakistan.
Leaders of Britain, Canada, Australia and Nigeria, as well as billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, committed tens of millions of dollars in additional funding toward the World Health Organization's campaign to wipe out the disabling disease from the four countries where it remains endemic ? India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
All the polio-endemic countries except for Afghanistan are represented at the three-day summit in the western Australian city of Perth. The summit comprises the leaders of 53 countries, most of them former British colonies.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said he was "seriously concerned" that polio infection rates had worsened in his country in recent years.
Pakistan was the only country in the world to increase reported polio infections last year. There were 144 cases in 2010, up from 89 in the previous year, according to WHO figures. So far this year, 118 cases have been reported in Pakistan ? the largest number of any country.
Gilani blamed the flow of people fleeing fighting on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, the inaccessibility of war zones to medical teams and religious "fanatics" opposed to vaccines for the failures of vaccination programs in the border regions.
But Pakistan's government remains committed to a target of eliminating polio by the end of this year, he said.
"No doubt we have a huge task ahead, but we remain determined to eradicate this and protect every child in Pakistan from the scourge of polio," Gilani told reporters.
In neighboring Afghanistan, polio infections have jumped from 30 last year to 41 so far this year.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said nations cannot accept the current situation where the world is only 99 percent polio free.
"If we fail to get rid of polio completely, we run the risk that the disease will spread back to countries where it's been eliminated," Cameron said.
Britain had already doubled its contribution to the 23-year-old WHO Global Polio Eradication Initiative for this year and 2012 when it announced in January an additional 40 million pound ($65 million) contribution.
Australia, which put polio on the Commonwealth meeting agenda, promised an addition 50 million Australian dollars ($54 million).
Gates used a video message to the Perth meeting to pledge an extra $40 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He warned that the campaign to eliminate polio forever was at a crossroads, saying recent cases in China demonstrated the risk of a polio resurgence.
China had been free of the paralytic disease for 11 years before an outbreak in the country's far western region that has paralyzed 17 people since July, killing one of them.
WHO said the polio strain detected in China traveled from neighboring Pakistan.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also pledged increased funding to polio surveillance, but did not specify an amount.
Harper said polio eradication was a key priority of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan. He said 85 percent of Afghanistan was polio free.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said his government's increasing its funding for polio vaccinations in the African nation from $17 million to $30 million annually should result in the disease disappearing by the end of 2012.
Nigeria has recorded 49 cases so far this year ? one more than all of 2010.
India recorded 44 cases in 2010, but this year has reported a single case, in January.

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will undergo chemotherapy to treat a cancerous tumor in his larynx, doctors said Saturday.
The tumor was detected earlier in the day during an examination at Sao Paulo's Sirio Libanes Hospital, the hospital said in a statement, which added that Silva will begin outpatient treatment in the coming week.
Oncologist Artur Katz, one of the doctors attending Silva, told reporters that the former president is in "very good condition."
He said the tumor was not very big and characterized Silva's chances of a full recovery as excellent.
Katz said it was not possible immediately to say what caused the tumor, adding it could have been sparked by the small cigars Silva used to smoke, or even a virus.
Jose Crispiniano, spokesman for the Lula Institute, a nongovernmental organization founded by the 66-year-old Silva after he left office Jan. 1, said the former president went to the hospital for a checkup because his throat was hurting him. He said Silva expected to begin chemotherapy Monday.
Paraguayan Foreign Minister Jorge Lara Castro, whose country is hosting the 23-nation IberoAmerican Conference in the capital of Asuncion, called the news "very sad."
"Those of us participating in this summit can only lend our solidarity and be there for him during his treatment," he said at a news conference.
Silva, known as "Lula" in Brazil and abroad, was elected president of Brazil in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. Under his leadership, Brazil experienced solid growth: The country's international reserves ballooned from $38 billion in 2002 to $240 billion by the end of 2009, inflation was tamed, 20 million people were lifted from poverty and nearly 40 million moved into the middle class.
Unemployment in Brazil hit a record low under Silva, and the country's currency more than doubled against the U.S. dollar. Silva also helped the nation win the right to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, the first-ever to be held in South America.
Silva left office with an 87 percent approval rating and managed to get his hand-picked successor, Dilma Rousseff, elected in 2010 to take his spot.
"President Lula is a leader, a symbol and an example for all of us," Rousseff said in a statement. "I am sure that his strength, determination and capacity to overcome all sorts of adversities will help him win this new challenge."
In 2009, Rousseff had a malignant tumor removed from her left armpit at the Sirio Libanes Hospital. She underwent chemotherapy treatment and was given a clean bill of health in August 2010.

Europe crafts debt deal that pleases markets (AP)
BRUSSELS ? European leaders clinched a deal Thursday they hope will mark a turning point in their two-year debt crisis, agreeing after a night of tense negotiations to have banks take bigger losses on Greece's debts and to boost the region's weapons against the market turmoil.
After months of dawdling and half-baked solutions, the leaders had been under immense pressure to finalize their plan to prevent the crisis from pushing Europe and much of the developed world back into recession and to protect their currency union from unraveling.
World stock markets surged higher Thursday on the news. Oil prices rose above $92 per barrel while the euro gained strongly ? a signal investors were relieved at the outcome of the contentious negotiations.
"We have reached an agreement, which I believe lets us give a credible and ambitious and overall response to the Greek crisis," French President Nicolas Sarkozy told reporters after the meeting ended early Thursday. "Because of the complexity of the issues at stake, it took us a full night. But the results will be a source of huge relief worldwide."
The strategy unveiled after 10 hours of negotiations focused on three key points. These included a significant reduction in Greece's debts, a shoring up of the continent's banks, partially so they could sustain deeper losses on Greek bonds, and a reinforcement of a European bailout fund so it can serve as a euro1 trillion ($1.39 trillion) firewall to prevent larger economies like Italy and Spain from being dragged into the crisis.
After several missed opportunities, hashing out a plan was a success for the 17-nation eurozone, but the strategy's effectiveness will depend on the details, which will have to be finalized in the coming days and weeks.
The most difficult piece of the puzzle proved to be Greece, whose debts the leaders vowed to bring down to 120 percent of its GDP by 2020. Under current conditions, they would have ballooned to 180 percent.
To achieve that massive reduction, private creditors like banks will be asked to accept 50 percent losses on the bonds they hold. The Institute of International Finance, which has been negotiating on behalf of the banks, said it was committed to working out an agreement based on that "haircut," but the challenge now will be to ensure that all private bondholders fall in line.
It said the 50 percent cut equals a contribution of euro100 billion ($139 billion) to a second rescue for Greece, although the eurozone promised to spend some euro30 billion ($42 billion) on guaranteeing the remaining value of the new bonds.
The full program is expected to be finalized by early December and investors are supposed to swap their bonds in January, at which point Greece is likely to become the first euro country ever to be rated at default on its debt.
"We can claim that a new day has come for Greece, and not only for Greece but also for Europe," said Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, whose country's troubles touched off the crisis two years ago. "Let's hope the worst is over."
Since May 2010, Greece has been surviving on rescue loans worth euro110 billion ($150 billion) from the 17 countries that use the euro and the International Monetary Fund since it can't afford to borrow money directly from markets.
In July, those creditors agreed to extend another euro109 billion ? but that plan was widely panned as insufficient.
Now, in addition to euro30 billion in bond guarantees, the eurozone leaders and IMF said they will give Greece euro100 billion ($139 billion) in new loans.
With the banks being asked to shoulder more of the burden, though, there were concerns they needed more money in their rainy-day funds to cushion their losses. So European leaders have asked them to raise euro106 billion ($148 billion) by June.
The last piece in the complicated plan was to increase the firepower of the continent's bailout fund to ensure that other countries with troubled economies ? like Italy and Spain ? don't get dragged into the crisis. The third- and fourth-largest economies of the eurozone are too large to be bailed out like the smaller euro nations Greece, Portugal and Ireland have already been.
To that end, the euro440 billion ($610 billion) European Financial Stability Facility will be used to insure part of the potential losses on the debt of wobbly eurozone countries like Italy and Spain, rendering its firepower equivalent to around euro1 trillion ($1.39 trillion).
That should make those countries' bonds more attractive investments and thus lower borrowing costs for their governments.
"These are exceptional measures for exceptional times. Europe must never find itself in this situation again," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said after the meetings.
In addition to acting as a direct insurer of bond issues, the EFSF insurance scheme is also supposed to entice big institutional investors to contribute to a special fund that could be used to buy government bonds but also to help states recapitalize weak banks.
Such outside help may be necessary for Italy and Spain, whose banks were facing some of the biggest capital shortfalls.
Using the insurance promise, the eurozone also hopes to attract big institutional investors from outside the eurozone, such as sovereign wealth funds, to contribute to a separate fund that would back up the EFSF.
Sarkozy was due to speak to Chinese President Hu Jintao later Thursday. On Friday, the head of the EFSF, Klaus Regling, will travel to China, which has huge cash reserves, to detail the insurance plan.
So far, Beijing has promised to help only by continuing business as usual, trading with Europe and stockpiling some of China's multibillion-dollar trade surpluses in the safest European government bonds.
On the markets, European trading was buoyant from the outset Thursday on the news. Britain's FTSE climbed 2.1 percent to 5,670.12. Germany's DAX jumped 3.5 percent to 6,227.61 and France's CAC-40 gained 3.6 percent to 3,282.32. Shares in Asia posted solid gains earlier in the day.

This is an inflorescence close-up of Pterygodium cooperi, an orchid indigenous to the grasslands of the Drakensberg Mountains in eastern South Africa. This flower secretes non-volatile oil as a pollinator reward and is pollinated by specialized solitary bees in the genus Rediviva (Melittidae). To collect the oil, the bee pushes back on the upper lip with its head while simultaneously inserting its forelegs into the central cup-like lip appendage that curves back into the flower. Using its forelegs with their specialized scraping and absorptive trichomes, it scrapes and wicks up the oil. The oil is transported back to the nest and used for provisioning and construction of the bee?s nest cells. The waxy projections of the lower lip cause the bee to slip as it positions itself on the flower and this results in the bee contacting and extracting the pollen sacs (pollinaria) with its hind legs. Unlike many orchids, this species provides a distinctive scent as well as a food reward to attract its specialized pollinators. The floral scent is dominated by the unusual benzenoid ketone 2-Methoxy-6-methyl-acetophenone (64.6%), as well as a variety of the aliphatic compounds including (E)-3-Methyl-4-Decenoic acid (9.1%), Heneicosane (5.0%), (E)-3-Methyl-4-decenal (2.9%), (E,Z)-2,6-Dodecadienal (2.8%), and Decanal (1.1 %). The dominance of benzenoids and/or aliphatic compounds is typical of the scents of the oil-secreting orchids in both Summer and Winter Rainfall regions despite the presence of different pollinator species. Thus phylogeny appears to be more important than pollinators in determining scent constituents of oil-secreting orchids in southern Africa. This is especially true for P. cooperi and other species in the Ommatodium clade that are dominated by 2-Methoxy-6-methyl-acetophenone regardless of pollinator or region of occurrence. Bees, bats, and moths all follow their noses in search of food from flowers. Plants that rely on such animals for pollination often produce particular chemical scents that attract specific pollinators. However, the ability to produce certain chemicals is also determined by a plant's genetics, or phylogenetic history, which can potentially limit its ability to respond to pollinator pressures. So which is more important in the evolution of floral scents: pollinator-induced natural selection or phylogenetic constraints?
While pollinators are often thought to be the driving force behind the type of chemicals plants produce to attract them, no matter how closely related the plants are to each other, a new study by Kim Steiner and colleagues published in the October issue of the American Journal of Botany (http://www.amjbot.org/content/98/10/1663.full) reveals that phylogeny may be more important than pollinators in determining floral scent characteristics in a group of specialized South African orchids.
"The evolution of any plant or animal character, be it morphological or something as seemingly intangible as a floral scent composed of many specific compounds, is a product of the balancing forces of natural selection and phylogenetic constraint," notes Steiner (University of Kwazulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa).
"While the results of natural selection, or pollinator-mediated selection, generally produce the most fascinating examples of evolution -- such as the extraordinarily long spurs of the Angraecum orchid (Darwin's orchid) and the equally extraordinarily long proboscis of its hawkmoth pollinator -- many characteristics are shared between closely related species simply as the result of their common ancestry, and it is important to be aware that this common ancestry can have a strong influence on the outcome of natural selection," Steiner says.
While Steiner was conducting fieldwork in South Africa, he noticed that the Redivia bees he was catching had small yellow objects attached to their legs. These turned out to be pollen packets (pollinaria) from orchid flowers. "By matching up the varied shapes and sizes of the different pollinaria found on the bees with those I extracted from the various orchid flowers I encountered, I was able to determine which orchid species these bees were visiting and what the attractant might be," Steiner comments. "For each orchid whose pollinaria the oil-collecting bees carried, I found that the flowers secreted a non-volatile oil rather than nectar as a reward. And, by examining as many orchid flowers as I could find, I discovered that over 100 orchid species in southern Africa produce oil as a pollinator reward and that these species are pollinated by oil-collecting bees."
The scents of these orchids, which are usually described as unpleasant, pungent, cloying, or smelling like soap, fascinated Steiner, and he sent as many scents as he could collect to a well-known authority on orchid scents, Roman Kaiser. According to Steiner, "Once we had a good sample of scents from the different oil-secreting orchids, we could begin to compare them and ask questions regarding whether closely related species had more similar scents than distantly related species and whether species pollinated by the same bee species also shared the same floral scent, even when they were not closely related. In other words, is phylogeny more important than natural selection in determining the composition of floral scents in this group of orchids?"
Steiner and his colleagues, Kaiser and D?tterl, predicted that because these oil-secreting orchids seem so specialized, the scent profiles of species pollinated by the same bee species would be similar regardless of phylogeny. They also predicted that the scents of orchids within a rainfall region (winter vs. summer) would be more similar to each other than to related species found in other regions.
Using a method called headspace adsorption, the authors sampled the scents of 39 oil-secreting Coryciinae orchids. Flowering stems for each species were enclosed in a glass vessel, and air was pumped through the vessel forcing scents to pass through a glass capillary tube, after which their distinct chemical compound signatures were captured via gas chromatography.
While 257 compounds from nine different compound classes were identified, each orchid species on average had 26 different compounds?more than 60% of the compounds were found in only one or two orchid species, and only 3% were found in more than half of the taxa.
Contrary to Steiner et al.'s expectations, in the winter rainfall region, phylogenetics seems to play a significantly greater role than pollinator selection pressure. Here the scent profiles fell along phylogenetic lines?related taxa had similar scents, while specific bee species pollinated taxa with different scents, and taxa with similar scents were pollinated by different bee species. Similarly, in the summer rainfall region, scent profiles also fell along phylogenetic lines, although the authors could not examine pollinator effects because most of the orchids in this region shared the same pollinators.
Interestingly, almost all the orchids in the two regions emitted similar scent compounds even though the Rediviva bee pollinator species differed between the two regions. This was also contrary to the authors' expectations.
Overall Steiner et al. found overwhelming support for the fact that phylogeny played a more important role in scent variation than pollinator selection, even in a group of closely related plant species pollinated by a single class of pollinator.
"We have shown that although there is evidence for pollinator-mediated selection in the chemical composition of some of the scents we analyzed," concludes Steiner, "for the group of oil-secreting orchids as a whole, the role of phylogenetic constraint is more important for determining overall scent composition of the fragrances than natural selection."
The authors are still hot on the trail of this flower/bee puzzle and are currently working on identifying the compounds that stimulate the olfactory sensilla of the bee's antennae. As Steiner notes, "We still need to examine the individual chemical constituents in the fragrances of oil-secreting orchids and to test which of these compounds can be detected physiologically by the oil-collecting bees. Then we can determine which of the myriad of compounds in the scents we have already analyzed are attractive to the oil-collecting bees."

An operation can be one of the most traumatic events children face, and according to a UCI study, many of them experience unnecessary postsurgical pain lasting weeks or months.
Such chronic pain is well understood and treated in adults but has been generally overlooked in pediatric patients, said Dr. Zeev Kain, professor and chair of anesthesiology & perioperative care.
This month, he and his UCI colleagues published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery the first-ever study of chronic postoperative pain in children. Out of 113 youngsters who had procedures ranging from appendectomies to orthopedic surgery, 13 percent reported pain that lingered for months.
While the sample group was small, Kain said, the study's implications are profound. Four million children undergo surgical procedures in the U.S. each year, suggesting that more than half a million of them suffer well after leaving the hospital. This results in more school absences and visits to the doctor and, for parents, days off work.
Kain said the research indicates that physicians need to more effectively manage pain within 48 hours of surgery which, in adults, has been shown to minimize the potential for chronic pain and that parents should be properly prepared to alleviate their child's pain at home.
"Medical professionals must understand this issue better and learn how to work with parents to care for chronic pain," he said. "We hope this study marks a first step toward long-term, definitive solutions."
UCI pediatric pain psychologist Michelle Fortier led the study which involved patients from CHOC Children's Hospital in Orange, Calif. and Drs. Jody Chou and Eva Mauer also participated.

Car Accidents More Dangerous For Women, Study Finds
Women have a higher risk of serious injury in a car accident than men, a new study reports.
Researchers said that's because vehicle safety equipment isn't made for women's bodies, which tend to be lighter and shorter than men's bodies.
The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, shows that women are 47 percent more likely to suffer a serious injury from a car accident than men are.
"To address the sex-specific disparity demonstrated in this study, health policies and vehicle regulations must focus on effective safety designs specifically tailored toward the female population for equity in injury reduction," the University of Virginia researchers wrote in the study.
However, ABC News reported that the findings probably don't apply to cars made today, since researchers only looked at car crashes between 1998 and 2008, and some of those cars were likely made before 1998.
"The average life of a car is around 12 years," Clarence Ditlow, of the Center for Auto Safety, told ABC News. "The study would have a lot more value if it were limited to 2000 and later model year vehicles to make sure all vehicles had female friendly airbags."
However, a 2007 study published by Carnegie Mellon University researchers show that men are more likely to actually die in a car accident, with men 77 percent more likely to be in a fatal car accident than women (when factoring in the number of miles driven), MSNBC reported.
As for which sex is actually safer behind the wheel -- research has shown results batting for both sides of the debate. AOL's Autoblog reported on a study that showed that women are more likely than men to be involved in accidents with T junctions, slip roads (a road connection to another road) and crossroads. But the 2007 Carnegie Mellon study shows that elderly women are safer drivers than teen boys, MSNBC reported.

Quake rescuers save baby, Turkey requests aid (Reuters)
ERCIS, Turkey (Reuters) ? Rescuers pulled a two-week-old baby girl alive from a collapsed apartment block on Tuesday as they battled to find survivors of an earthquake in eastern Turkey that killed more than 400 people and made tens of thousands homeless.
The baby's mother and a grandmother were also brought out alive on stretchers to jubilant cries from onlookers who followed the dramatic rescue under cold, pouring rain.
"It's a miracle!" said Senol Yigit, the uncle of the baby, Azra, whose name means "purity" or "untouched" in Arabic. "I'm so happy. What can I say? We have been waiting for two days. We had lost hope when we first saw the building," he said sobbing.
However, hope of finding more people alive under the rubble faded with every passing hour as more bodies were found.
The death toll from Sunday's 7.2-magnitude quake rose to 459, with 1,352 injured, the Disaster and Emergency Administration said. The final count was likely to rise further as many people were still missing and 2,262 buildings had collapsed.
Thousands prepared to spend a third night in freezing temperatures in crowded tents or huddled around fires across a quake-prone region in Van province, near the Iranian border.
With the government facing criticism over shortages of tents and other relief items, Turkey requested prefabricated housing and tents from more than 30 countries, including Israel, a Foreign Ministry official told Reuters.
Ties between the two former strategic allies have been frayed since Israeli commandos killed nine Turks on board a Gaza-bound flotilla last year.
Many victims accused the central government of poor organization and of being slow in delivering aid to a region inhabited mostly by minority Kurds and home to a separatist insurgency against the Turkish state. Fighting broke out among desperate victims to grab tents from overwhelmed aid workers.
Spelling more trouble for authorities, gunshots were heard as prisoners set fire to a jail and fought with guards in Van, two days after a jailbreak in which 200 were reported to have escaped in the chaos after the quake.
The ruling AK Party has apologized for distribution problems. Urgency to offer shelters was heightened by worsening weather, with the first winter snow less than a month away.
"PUSHED BACK 100 YEARS"
"We have no tents, everybody is living outdoors. Van has collapsed psychologically, life has stopped. Tens of thousands are on the streets. Everybody is in panic," Kemal Balci, a construction worker, said as he awaited news of friends injured in the quake at a hospital in Van.
"Aid has been arriving late. Van has been reduced to zero. We have no jobs, no bread, no water and there are nine members in my family. If the government doesn't give a hand to Van it will be like Afghanistan. Van has been pushed back 100 years."
The quake, Turkey's most powerful in a decade, is one more affliction for Kurds, the dominant ethnic group in impoverished southeast Turkey, where more than 40,000 people have been killed in a three-decade-long separatist insurgency.
In an escalation of hostilities, Turkish warplanes struck targets overnight in northern Iraq, where the separatist militants have bases.
About 500 soldiers have crossed the border with armored vehicles following an attack last week by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters that killed 24 Turkish troops, security sources said.
Quake rescue efforts focused on Ercis, a town of 100,000 that was worst hit, and Van, the provincial capital, have been hampered by power cuts and by more than 500 aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 5.4 on Tuesday.
"MIRACLE" BABY
Emergency workers extracted the infant girl from the wreckage two days after she was buried with her mother under an apartment block.
The mother was clutching the child to her chest when they were reached by rescuers, who then set about rescuing the mother and a grandmother who were also still alive.
"We're going to get them out soon," a rescuer assured the other grandmother, whose eyes brimmed with tears of joy at the survival of her grandchild, who was born prematurely.
Elsewhere, exhausted workers used machinery, jackhammers, shovels, pick axes and bare hands to comb through rubble. Every so often, they would shout for silence and generators and diggers would stop, straining to hear voices under rubble. Seconds later the drone of the machinery would start again.
The Turkish Red Crescent said it is preparing temporary shelter for about 40,000 people, although there are no reliable figures for the homeless.
SLOW RESPONSE
Officials said 12,000 more tents would reach Van on Tuesday for the neediest, particularly in villages.
"Life has become hell. We are outside, the weather is cold. There are no tents," said Emin Kayram, 53, sitting by a campfire in Ercis after spending the night with his family of eight in a van parked nearby. His nephew was trapped in the debris of a building behind him, where rescue workers dug through the night.
"He is 18, a student. He is still stuck in there. This is the third day but you can't lose hope. We have to wait here."
How fast Ankara manages to deliver aid and long-term relief to the survivors might have political consequences in a region plagued by poverty and the Kurdish insurgency, analysts said.
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who won a third consecutive term with a strong majority in a June election, has promised to push reforms in parliament and rewrite the constitution to address long-time Kurdish grievances in an effort to end violence. Erdogan traveled to the region on Sunday, and President Abdullah Gul has also announced plans to visit.
"If we want to win the hearts of our brothers of Kurdish origin, we should act now. We should beat the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) with this approach, which is more effective than arms," leading analyst Mehmet Ali Birand wrote.
Fighting broke out among a crowd of around 200-300 people
after a truck arrived in Van city and started handing out tents next to a cemetery. Women were hit and kicked as people tried to force their way through to get access to the tents, while police tried in vain to establish order.
"There is absolutely no coordination, you have to step on people to get a tent," said jobless Suleyman Akbulut, 18.
"The prime minister runs for help when it's Palestine or Somalia, sends ships to Palestine, almost goes to war with Israel for the sake of Palestinians, but he doesn't move a muscle when it comes to his own people," said Emrullah, a young man of about 18.

Bear roams NASA lab's campus
LOS ANGELES?? Employees of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Los Angeles were advised to stay indoors on Tuesday after a 200-pound bear was spotted roaming the campus.
The lab arranged escorts for workers at the north side of the facility, which manages many of NASA's planetary space missions, JPL spokeswoman Veronica McGregor said, after the bear was seen there at about 4 a.m. local time.
"They did estimate the bear's size at about 200 pounds and it was spotted in the early predawn hours so that's why we were able to put out the notification," she said.
McGregor said the bear was believed to be the second in the last decade to ramble onto the lab property, which also has had visits from deer and at least one mountain lion.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center and NASA facility that in recent years has managed the Mars Exploration Rovers, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Cassini-Huygens probe to Saturn.

Harsh discipline fosters dishonesty in young children, study suggests
ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2011) ? Young children exposed to a harshly punitive school environment are more inclined to lie to conceal their misbehaviour than are children from non-punitive schools, a study of three- and four-year-old West African children suggests.
The study, published in the journal Child Development, also indicates that children in a punitive environment are able to tell more convincing lies than those in a non-punitive environment.
The research, by Professor Victoria Talwar of McGill University and Professor Kang Lee of the University of Toronto, examined deceptive behaviours in two groups of children living in the same neighbourhood. One group was enrolled in a private school that used a traditional authoritarian discipline model, in which beating with a stick, slapping of the head, and pinching were administered publicly and routinely for offenses ranging from forgetting a pencil to being disruptive in class. In the other school, also private, children were disciplined with time-outs or scolding and, for more serious offenses, were taken to the principal's office for further reprimand.
The study involved an experiment comparing the behaviour of children in the two schools. Children were seen individually and asked to play a guessing game by an experimenter who was born and raised locally. The children were told not to peek at a toy when left alone in a room. Most children in both schools couldn't resist the temptation, and peeked at the toy. When the experimenter asked if they had peeked, nearly all the peekers from the punitive school lied -- compared with just over half of those from the non-punitive school. What's more, after the initial lie, lie-tellers from the punitive school were better able to maintain their deception when answering follow-up questions about the identity of the toy -- by deliberately giving an incorrect answer, for example, or by feigning ignorance, rather than blurting out the name of the toy.
The findings suggest that "a punitive environment not only fosters increased dishonesty but also children's abilities to lie to conceal their transgressions," Talwar and Lee conclude.
In fact, the three- and four-year-old lie-tellers in the punitive school were as advanced in their ability to tell convincing lies as six- to seven-year-old lie-tellers in existing studies. "This finding is surprising," the authors note, as "existing studies have consistently found that children from punitive environments tend to suffer general delays in cognitive development."
"One possibility is that the harsh punitive environment heightens children's motivation to come up with any strategies that will help them survive in that environment," Prof. Lee says. "Lying seems particularly adaptive for the situation.
"Our study, I think, may serve as a cautionary tale for parents who sometimes would use the harshest means of punishment when they catch their children lying. It is clear that corporal punishment not only does not reduce children's tendency to lie, but actually improves their lying skills."

MISRATA, Libya (AP) ? A Misrata military council official said Moammar Gadhafi, his son Muatassim and a top aide were buried at dawn Tuesday in a secret location, with a few relatives and officials in attendance.
In a text message shown to The Associated Press, spokesman Ibrahim Beitalmal said Islamic prayers were read over the bodies. The information could not be independently verified.
The bodies of Gadhafi, his son Muatassim and former Defense Minister Abu Bakr Younis had been held in cold storage in the port city of Misrata since the dictator and members of his entourage were captured near his hometown of Sirte on Thursday. Gadhafi and Muatassim were captured alive, with some injuries, but died in unclear circumstances later that day.
Libya's interim leaders have promised an investigation, responding to mounting international pressure.
On Monday, Beitalmal had said the three would be buried in unmarked graves in a secret location to prevent vandalism. Presumably, the graves would also be kept hidden to avoid turning them into shrines for Gadhafi loyalists.
International organizations asking to see the burial site would be given access, Beitalmal said.
Over the weekend, Libya's chief pathologist, Dr. Othman el-Zentani performed autopsies on the three bodies and also took DNA samples to confirm their identities. El-Zentani has said Gadhafi died from a shot to the head, and said the full report would be released later this week, after he presents his findings to the attorney general.
It remains unclear when exactly Gadhafi suffered the fatal injury ? before he was taken into custody or after he had been captured by revolutionary fighters.

My Role with the Communications Committee // The Alternative ...
To the Editor,
I wish to clearly and concisely address the uncalled-for attack on my integrity presented in a previous letter by Nicholas Schiavo.
In the letter, Mr. Schiavo accuses me of lying about my role with the Berkeley Heights Communications Committee and orders me to retract my statement that I helped to bring our local media outlets together for a TV news program.
This accusation is entirely untrue. Below is a chronological summary of my role with the Communications Committee in facilitating the TV news program. Each moment can be confirmed by e-mail and phone logs that I have in my possession, and can be shared with any reader who doubts my story.
- In February, after being formally appointed to the Communications Committee, I conctacted Councilman Craig Pastore (the Councilman who was spear-heading the Committee intiative) to offer my services in starting a news program. Councilman Pastore asked me to work with Nicholas Schiavo on the project.
- On April 5th, Mr. Schiavo e-mailed me to ask that I would act as editor and producer of the news program. He outlined what he wanted the program to look like and asked me to facilitate a meeting with the appopriate parties. In this e-mail, Mr. Schiavo wrote "Afterwards, it [the program] is all yours" and "[Y]our word is FINAL should the 3 news media outlets have any questions/concerns." In other words, Mr. Schiavo entrusted me with the responsibility of organizing the program.
- I spoke with Mr. Schiavo on April 7th and agreed to his proposal.
- On April 14th, Mr. Schiavo informed me that he and Councilman Craig Pastore had reached out to? members of the business community, and that a business segment of the news program should be included. I agreed with the idea.
- The next time I heard from Mr. Schiavo was May 1st, in an e-mail sent to the businessmen who had agreed to participate in the news program. In it, I am designated as the "managing editor" and am listed as a volunteer with the Communications Committee.
- On May 3rd, Mr. Schiavo e-mailed me to ask that I contact all 3 local media outlets - The Alternative Press, the Independent Press and Berkeley Heights/Mountainside Patch - and have them attend a planning meeting for the news program. I promptly did so, e-mailing Mike Shapiro, Mike Curci of Patch and Tracy Ness (then of the IP) to request their outlet's participation.
- Over the next few days, I recieved confirmation from Mr. Shapiro that he would participate, and from Mr. Curci and Mrs. Ness that they would contact their Editors (Patch ultimately joined the intiative, the IP did not). I forwarded all e-mails to Mr. Schiavo.
- On May 6th, I spoke with Mr. Schiavo and expressed my concern that my candidacy for Council would compromise my ability to be an objective Editor/Producer for the news program. Mr. Schiavo agreed that I should hand over the production of the program to him as soon as we heard back from all the media outlets. According to my phone log this conversation took place in the late afternoon.
- On May 7th I sent an e-mail to all 3 media outlets, explaining that a scheduled meeting had been postponed, and furthermore they should work with Mr. Schiavo going forward.
- After May 7th I forwarded all correspondence regarding the TV news program to Mr. Schiavo.
At no time during this 3-week period did Mr. Schiavo ask me to inform other Communication Committee members about the TV news program and its progress. At no time during this period did Mr. Schiavo state, explicitly or implicitly, that I was not "following up" on my role with the news program. Therefore, the accusations in the letter are completely false and should be ignored as such by the voters of Berkeley Heights.
I would like to note that Mr. Schiavo initially attempted to publish his letter on Patch. He did so anonymously in the hopes (I believe) of protecting his reputation while smearing mine. I do not know why Mr. Schiavo has made these accusations; at no time during or after my statement was initially made did he reach out to correct me or request a retraction. I only became aware of his accusation by seeing the letter online.
To sum up, the above chronology, and the documentation with it, clearly shows that I helped to facilitate the TV news program that is underway in Berkeley Heights. I will not retract my statement and make no apologies for telling the truth.
