Ravens' reputation for gab not yet displayed at SB

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens' reputation for trash-talking arrived at the Super Bowl before they did.

While the Ravens were en route from Baltimore to the Big Easy, the San Francisco 49ers were already preparing for war of words with the chattiest team in the NFL.

"Most teams don't really talk that much, but I've heard stories about them talking a lot," San Francisco guard Alex Boone said. "Guys have told me not to get into it with them. We're not here to get into a yelling match."

That might change a bit Sunday when both teams play for the NFL championship at the Superdome.

The Ravens developed their swagger years ago under coach Brian Billick, who rarely backed away from a microphone and made no effort to put a muzzle on his players, most notably Shannon Sharpe and Tony Siragusa ? both of whom are now being paid to blab as television commentators.

Baltimore's current coach, John Harbaugh, doesn't encourage such brashness. But he won't stop it, either. After the Ravens beat New England to win the AFC championship, Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard insisted that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady should be fined for a leg-up slide even though Brady apologized afterward.

Linebacker Terrell Suggs topped that in an interview with Yahoo Sports, calling the Patriots "arrogant" and telling them "to have fun at the Pro Bowl."

Now that he's on football's biggest stage, Suggs has taken it down a few decibels, judging by his tone at Monday's media interviews. Here's a bulletin: He said nothing the 49ers might consider clipping from a newspaper and pinning to the bulletin board for motivation.

"I'm going to talk to you guys with the obligated time that I'm supposed to talk to you guys ... and I'm going to stick to that," Suggs said.

Asked if he might say something juicy later in the week, Suggs replied, "Nothing I do is scripted. You've got to wait and see what I come up with."

It might be worth the wait, although Harbaugh seems to think Suggs and the rest of the team will resist the temptation.

"Our guys are class guys. We'll play with character, we'll play with class," Harbaugh said. "We'll be a tough, hard-nosed football team. That's the way we'll play. Before the game, after the game."

That's not what the 49ers have heard.

"Talk is cheap. I'll leave it at that," linebacker NaVorro Bowman said. "We've all got to play with those pads on. That's what does the talking for us."

Linebacker Ray Lewis does much of the talking for the Baltimore defense. After leading the unit in an emotional chant following each pregame workout, Lewis yells the signals on the field and usually has something bold to say to an opponent he's dropped to the turf.

"Ray and Suggs, they like to talk a lot but they're great players, so it's kind of warranted," 49ers fullback Bruce Miller said.

"I think that's just the way they motivate their team," San Francisco cornerback Tarrell Brown added. "Everybody feeds off that. Whatever works for them, that's good."

When Lewis told his teammates earlier this month that he was going to retire after the current postseason run, Suggs thought the team's vocal leader was merely gearing up for another speech.

"He always talks to the team before the game, the middle of the season and going into the playoffs," Suggs said. "I thought it was another day at the office, but he said some key words. It struck me. He said maybe it was time to start doing something else and it just kind of puzzled me and then it hit me. It really focused our team, not only to get it done for him, but just how precious this time and these moments are. You don't get these opportunities every day."

Lewis may the most prolific talker on the team, but he's not the only one who enjoys yapping. As soon as they got off the plane from Baltimore, Suggs, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Matt Birk, Ray Rice and Joe Flacco were made available to the media.

While Lewis discussed, among other things, his pending retirement, his family and his love for God, Reed talked about everything from his training habits to his experience as a punt, pass and kick participant in New Orleans more than two decades ago.

None of it was going to get the 49ers riled up before Sunday's game, which is just the way Harbaugh likes it.

"I think we're very respectful of our opponents," the coach said. "We always have been, and our opponents have respected us over the years. The team we're playing is built the same way. We've got a lot of respect for the 49ers. We've got a lot of respect for their coach, the coaching staff, their players, and I expect it to be played in that way."

Injecting botox into stomach does not promote weight loss

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Gastric injections of botulinum toxin A (BTA) can delay gastric emptying but do not make obese individuals feel more full, alter their eating behaviors, or cause them to lose weight, according to the February issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

In attempts to help people lose weight, researchers have tested ways to slow gastric emptying (movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine) and increase satiation (feeling full). Gastric injections of BTA have been reported to delay gastric emptying, increase satiation, and reduce body weight, but with inconsistent results.

Botulinum toxin -- a protein and neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum -- reduces muscle activity by blocking the release of acetylcholine from neurons.

Mark Topazian et al. compared the effects of injecting different doses of BTA into the stomachs of 60 individuals with mild-to-moderate obesity.

Study participants were each given 1 injection of BTA (100, 300, or 500 U), or placebo, in the gastric antral muscularis propria, guided by endoscopic ultrasound. Gastric emptying of solids was measured by scintigraphy. Topazian et al. also measured participants' body weights every 2 weeks, along with satiation (based on maximum tolerated volume in a caloric liquid drink test), calorie intake (based on a questionnaire), gastrointestinal symptoms, and psychological aspects of eating.

Two weeks after the injections, the mean half-time for gastric emptying of solids increased by 0.8, 14, 24, and 14 minutes among subjects given placebo, 100, 300, or 500 U BTA, respectively.

Sixteen weeks after the injections, mean body weights were reduced by 2.2, 0.2, 2.3, and 3.0 kg in these groups, respectively -- not a statistically significant difference.

Nor were there significant differences among groups in satiation volume, caloric intake, gastrointestinal symptoms, or psychological aspects of eating among groups.

So, although stomach injection of BTA slows gastric emptying, it does not increase the feeling of fullness or lead to loss of body weight. The authors say is unlikely that higher doses of BTA than those tested would induce additional delays in gastric emptying or weight loss.

Previous studies have associated gastrointestinal symptoms with eating behaviors. Topazian et al. did observe that a higher maximum tolerated volume, a physiological measure of satiation, correlated with less control over eating. They propose that educating obese patients about physiological differences in stomach volume might help them improve their ability to control how much they eat.

Could Brazil's nightclub fire spur more regional accountability?

The deadly nightclub fire is not unique in a region plagued by multiple tragedies that are often the result of lax safety standards, poor oversight, and overcrowded conditions.

Today marks 500 days until the kick-off of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. It's a moment that normally would bring worldwide attention to the country, also host of the 2016 summer Olympics, as it seeks to secure a spot on the international stage.

Instead, Brazil is in the spotlight for a tragic club fire that took more than 230 lives, many of the victims under the age of 20. The fire was caused by a pyrotechnic display set off by band members late Saturday evening that caused the venue to fill up, within minutes, with a cloud of deadly smoke. Many of the victims were found in the bathrooms, with reports noting they may have mistaken it for an exit or were trying to escape through back windows.

Today, FIFA was slated to unveil the official World Cup poster in Brazil, but the event was cancelled ?in respect for the more than 200 people who died in a tragic incident in Santa Maria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul,? the group said in a statement.

The deadly fire comes at a time when Brazil is under increased scrutiny for its preparedness to host upcoming mega-events. And negative press is likely to abound, as it has each time something tragic has occurred in Brazil since it found out it was to play back-to-back host.

But maybe the spotlight can inspire widespread accountability in a region that has been plagued by multiple tragedies that are often due to lax safety standards, poor oversight, and overcrowded conditions.

The Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria was not unique in terms of club fires and deadly riots in Latin America.

Just last week, a prison riot in Venezuela left 54 dead, and nearly double that injured. The prison, Uribana, was holding 1,400 prisoners at the time that fighting broke out, according to Bloomberg, but is only designed to hold 850 prisoners. It follows another tragic incident in a jail in Venezuela in August 2012, when fighting left 20 dead, something Human Rights Watch said underscores the rampant overcrowding in Venezuelan prisons.

And tragic events reach beyond South America. A year ago, a fire broke out in a prison in Honduras that killed 350 people. And in June 2009 in Mexico, 49 victims, ages 3 and under were trapped inside a daycare in the city of?Hermosillo?in the northwest of the country.

Stocks approaching 2007 record highs

19 hrs.

NEW YORK?- U.S. stocks have been on a tear in January, moving major indexes within striking distance of all-time highs. The bearish case is a difficult one to make right now.

Earnings have exceeded expectations, the housing and labor markets have strengthened, lawmakers in Washington no longer seem to be the roadblock that they were for most of 2012, and money has returned to stock funds again.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index has gained 5 percent this year - climbing to the spot where Wall Street strategists expected it to be by mid-year. The Dow Jones industrial average is less than 3 percent away from all-time highs reached in October 2007.

"Once we break above a resistance level at 1,510, we dramatically increase the probability that we break the highs of 2007," said Walter Zimmermann, technical analyst at United-ICAP, in Jersey City, N.J. "That may be the start of a rise that could take equities near 1,800 within the next few years."

The most recent Reuters poll of Wall Street strategists estimated the benchmark index would rise to 1,550 by year-end, a target that is less than 4 percent away from current levels. That would put the S&P 500 a stone's throw from the index's all-time intraday high of 1,576.09 reached on Oct. 11, 2007.

The new year has brought a sharp increase in flows into U.S. equity mutual funds, and that has helped stocks rack up four straight weeks of gains, with strength in big- and small-caps alike.

That's not to say there aren't concerns. Economic growth has been steady, but not as strong as many had hoped. The household unemployment rate remains high at 7.8 percent. And more than 75 percent of the stocks in the S&P 500 are above their 26-week highs, suggesting the buying has come too far, too fast.

All 10 S&P 500 industry sectors are higher in 2013, in part because of new money flowing into equity funds. Investors in U.S.-based funds committed $3.66 billion to stock mutual funds in the latest week, the third straight week of big gains for the funds, data from Thomson Reuters' Lipper service showed on Thursday.

Energy shares led the way with a gain of 6.6 percent, followed by industrials, up 6.3 percent. Telecom, a defensive play that underperforms in periods of growth, is the weakest sector - up 0.1 percent for the year.

More than 250 stocks hit new highs on Friday alone on the New York Stock Exchange. The Dow Jones Transportation Average recently climbed to an all-time high, with stocks in this sector and other economic bellwethers posting strong gains almost daily.

"If you peel back the onion a little bit, you start to look at companies like Precision Castparts, Honeywell , 3M Co and Illinois Tool Works - these are big, broad-based industrial companies in the U.S. and they are all hitting new highs, and doing very well. That is the real story," said Mike Binger, portfolio manager at Gradient Investments, in Shoreview, Minn.

The gains have run across asset sizes as well. The S&P small-cap index has jumped 6.1 percent and the S&P mid-cap index has shot up 6.8 percent so far this year.

Exchange-traded funds have seen year-to-date inflows of $15.6 billion, with fairly even flows across the small-, mid- and large-cap categories, according to Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at the ConvergEx Group, in New York.

"Investors aren't really differentiating among asset sizes. They just want broad equity exposure," Colas said.

The market has shown resilience to weak news. On Thursday, the S&P 500 held steady despite a 12 percent slide in shares of Apple after the iPhone and iPad maker's results. The tech giant is heavily weighted in both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 and in the past, its drop has suffocated stocks' broader gains.

In the last few days, the ratio of stocks hitting new highs versus those hitting new lows on a daily basis has started to diminish - a potential sign that the rally is narrowing to fewer names - and could be running out of gas.

Investors have also cited sentiment surveys that indicate high levels of bullishness among newsletter writers, a contrarian indicator, and momentum indicators are starting to also suggest the rally has perhaps come too far.

The market's resilience could be tested next week with the release of the January non-farm payrolls report. About 155,000 jobs are seen being added in the month and the unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 7.8 percent.

"Staying over 1,500 sends up a flag of profit taking," said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee, in Birmingham, Ala. "Since recent jobless claims have made us optimistic on payrolls, if that doesn't come through, it will be a real risk to the rally."

A number of marquee names will report earnings next week, including bellwether companies such as Caterpillar Inc, Amazon.com Inc, Ford Motor Co and Pfizer Inc .

On a historic basis, valuations remain relatively low - the S&P 500's current price-to-earnings ratio sits at 15.66, which is just a tad above the historic level of 15.

Worries about the U.S. stock market's recent strength do not mean the market is in a bubble. Investors clearly don't feel that way at the moment.

"We're seeing more interest in equities overall, and a lot of flows from bonds into stocks," said Paul Zemsky, who helps oversee $445 billion as the New York-based head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management. "We've been increasing our exposure to risky assets."

Thousands join funerals after deaths in Egypt port city

CAIRO (Reuters) - Gunshots rang out in Port Said on Sunday as people packed the streets for the funerals of 33 protesters killed at the weekend in the city, part of a wave of violence that has compounded challenges facing President Mohamed Mursi.

Some in the crowd chanted for revenge or shouted anti-Mursi slogans and teargas was fired in the vicinity, a witness said by telephone, adding that he heard emergency vehicle sirens after the shots were fired.

"Our soul and blood, we sacrifice to Port Said," people chanted, as the coffins were carried through the streets.

There were no immediate reports of further casualties in the city, where 33 people were killed on Saturday when residents went on the rampage after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the city, to death for their role in a deadly stadium disaster in Port Said last year.

Elsewhere in Egypt, police fired teargas at dozens of stone-throwing protesters in Cairo in a fourth day of clashes. Protests in the capital and other cities erupted at the end of last week over what the demonstrators say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

The protesters accuse Mursi, elected in June with the support of his Muslim Brotherhood group, of betraying the democratic goals of the revolution. Since protesters hit the streets on Thursday, 42 people have been killed, most in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

The violence adds to the daunting task facing Mursi as he tries to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary election expected in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy.

It has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Mursi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader by undemocratic means.

"BLOOD BEING SPILT"

"None of the revolution's goals have been realised," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

On a bridge close to Tahrir Square, youths hurled stones at police in riot gear who fired teargas to push them back towards the square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.

The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Mursi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Egypt's defence minister who also heads the army, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, called for the nation to stand together and said the military would not prevent peaceful protests. But he called on demonstrators to protect public property.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the regular escalations that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

CALL FOR DIALOGUE

The National Defence Council, headed by Mursi, called on Saturday for national dialogue to discuss political differences.

That offer has been cautiously welcomed by the opposition National Salvation Front. But the coalition has demanded a clear agenda and guarantees that any agreements will be implemented.

The Front, formed late last year when Mursi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and to call for more protests if a list of demands is not met, including having an early presidential vote.

Egypt's transition has been blighted from the outset by political rows and turbulence on the streets that have driven investors out and kept many tourists away, starving the economy of vital sources of hard currency.

Egypt's pound has been hit hard by the turmoil, steadily weakening against the dollar despite efforts by the central bank to slow the fall and preserve foreign reserves now at critical levels. The latest violence has added to investors' concerns.

The Port Said clashes erupted after a judge sentenced 21 men to death for involvement in 74 deaths at a soccer match on February 1, 2012 between Cairo's Al Ahly club and the local al-Masri team. Many of the victims were fans of the visiting team.

There were 73 defendants in the case. Those not sentenced on Saturday will face a verdict on March 9, the judge said.

Al Ahly fans cheered the verdict after threatening action if the death penalty was not meted out. But Port Said residents were furious that people from their city were held responsible.

Dot Earth Blog: Weaker Global Warming Seen in Study Promoted by Norway's Research Council

| Updates below |
Purveyors of climate doubt have seized on a news release from the Research Council of Norway with this provocative title: ?Global warming less extreme than feared?? The release describes new research finding that global warming from the buildup of greenhouse gases will be on the low end of the persistently wide spread of projections by other research groups. (There?s a presentation describing the work below.)

[Jan. 27, 9:28 a.m. | Update |With Twitter assistance from Norway, the history of this news release is becoming clearer. It appears to be a fresh English translation of a release from October describing a study (Aldrin et al., below) that had been published. Read on for the rest of the initial post, but this incident no longer calls out for a "publicity before peer review" warning.]

[Post as published Jan. 26:] This may well end up being the case (I?d give it higher than even odds; even so, that doen?t justify an ?all clear? alert). But this particular analysis has, as yet, not been published in a peer-reviewed journal. This means that although the release comes from a prestigious government science agency, the work needs a publicity before publication caution label. I created one just for this purpose (above) and will use it when needed.

This is hardly the first instance of a promotion-before-review approach to climate discourse. For instance, Richard Muller?s Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project took this path (one of that group?s five papers has finally made it into a journal). (This phenomenon is not limited to climate science, of course; here?s an example related to the fight over gas drilling.)

Earlier today I sent the following query to the Research Council of Norway and I?ll update this post when I hear more:

With some urgency I?m trying to get some clarity on the status of the climate sensitivity analysis that the Research Council promoted yesterday. Is it published in a peer-reviewed journal? The only relevant study I could find was published last year (see below).

Perhaps it?s more like a U.S. National Academy report? If so, please describe the level of peer review. The work is being?aggressively disseminated?by bloggers and news outlets that focus on any research casting doubt on the importance of greenhouse-driven warming.

Thanks for any input clarifying the status of the research and explaining why it was released now if it?s?not yet accepted for publication?

I included a link to a presentation on the paper (which you can find below) and to this relevant paper from last year:

Bayesian estimation of climate sensitivity based on a simple climate model fitted to observations of hemispheric temperatures and global ocean heat content

Magne Aldrin,?Marit Holden,?Peter Guttorp,?Ragnhild Bieltvedt Skeie, Gunnar Myhre,?Terje Koren Berntsen

Here?s a presentation about the new analysis of global warming (the closest thing I?ve seen to the paper itself):

Norwegian Study Finds Limited Warming from Doubled Greenhouse Gases by Andrew Revkin

Finally, for those who want to dig in a bit, here?s a comment I received from Reto Knutti, a Swiss climate scientist, after I sent the Norwegian release and presentation around:

As you said, Aldrin et al. (DOI: 10.1002/env.2140) is published, whereas Skeie et al. is not yet as far as I know. But here are some thoughts that are largely independent of this paper to put these types of studies in context.

If you look at the Fig. 3a in our review (red lines at the top) you see that many previous estimates based on the observed warming/ocean heat uptake had a tendency to peak at values below 3?C (that review is from 2008). The Norwegian study is just another one of these studies looking at the global energy budget. The first ones go back more than a decade, so the idea is hardly new. The idea is always the same: if you assume a distribution for the observed warming, the ocean heat uptake, and the radiative forcing, then you can derive a distribution for climate sensitivity.

What is obvious is that including the data of the past few years pushes the estimates of climate sensitivity downward, because there was little warming over the past decade despite a larger greenhouse gas forcing. Also in some datasets the ocean warming in the top 700 meters is rather small, with very small uncertainties (Levitus GRL 2012), pushing the sensitivity down further. However, in my view one should be careful in over interpreting these results for several reasons:

a) the uncertainties in the assumed radiative forcings are still very large. Recently, Solomon et al. Science (2010, 2011) raised questions about the stratospheric water vapor and aerosol, and just days ago there was another paper arguing for a larger effect of black carbon (http://www.agu.org/news/press/pr_archives/2013/2013-01.shtml, a massive 280 pages?).

b) Results are sensitive to the data used, as shown by Libardoni and Forest DOI: 10.1029/2011GL049431 and others, and particularly sensitive to how the last decade of data is treated. Very different methods (detection attribution optimal fingerprint) have also shown that the last decade makes a difference (Gillett et al. 2011, doi:10.1029/2011GL050226).

c) The uncertainties in the ocean heat uptake may be underestimated by Levitus, and there are additional uncertainties regarding the role of deep ocean heat uptake (Meehl et al. 2011 Nature Climate Change).

Even though we have many of these studies (and I am responsible for a couple of them) I?m getting more and more nervous about them, because they are so sensitive to the climate model, the prior distributions, the forcing, the ocean data, the error model, etc. The reason for this, to a large extent, is that the data constraint is weak, so the outcome (posterior) is dominated by what you put in (prior).

It is important to note that the IPCC assessment of climate sensitivity is based on many lines of evidence (see Fig. 3 in our 2008 review for an overview). The observed energy budget is just one of them. The latest paleoclimate synthesis (Rohling et al. Nature 2012) supports the ?likely 2-4.5?C?, and all GCMs have sensitivities in the range 2-5?C, the mean in CMIP5 is above 3?C, and once you start evaluating models with observations that tends to get pushed upward (Fasullo and Trenberth, Science 2012).

Finally, note that the effect of the last few years of data is smaller on the transient climate response than on climate sensitivity. It?s the transient climate response (TCR) that determines the 21st century warming and peak warming.

7:52 a.m. |Update

I was remiss in not including a link to an excellent recent breakdown of the climate sensitivity question at RealClimate.org. Gavin Schmidt describes the different approaches to the question, and why there are essentially two conclusions, both surrounded by different kinds of uncertainty. His takeaway line:

[T]he ?meta-uncertainty? across the methods remains stubbornly high with support for both relatively low numbers around 2?C and higher ones around 4?C, so that is likely to remain the consensus range.

(There?s a part 2 post there focused on the role of clouds in warming.)

10:56 a.m. |Update

The same goes for Judith Curry?s long exploration of the mix of modeling and observations leading to the range of possible warming projections from a doubling of pre-industry carbon dioxide concentrations.

11:42 a.m. |Update

This paper is deeply relevant (Roger A. Pielke, Jr., of the University of Colorado sent a link as part of an e-mail discussion with other climate science and policy researchers:

Anchoring Devices in Science for Policy: The Case of Consensus around Climate Sensitivity

  1. Jeroen van der Sluijs1,
  2. Jos?e van Eijndhoven2,
  3. Simon Shackley3?and
  4. Brian Wynne4

This paper adds a new dimension to the role of scientific knowledge in policy by emphasizing the multivalent character of scientific consensus. We show how the maintained consensus about the quantitative estimate of a central scientific concept in the anthropogenic climate-change field ? namely, climate sensitivity ? operates as an `anchoring device? in `science for policy?. In international assessments of the climate issue, the consensus-estimate of 1.5?C to 4.5?C for climate sensitivity has remained unchanged for two decades. Nevertheless, during these years climate scientific knowledge and analysis have changed dramatically. We identify several ways in which the scientists achieved flexibility in maintaining the same numbers for climate sensitivity while accommodating changing scientific ideas.

We propose that the remarkable quantitative stability of the climate sensitivity range has helped to hold together a variety of different social worlds relating to climate change, by continually translating and adapting the meaning of the `stable? range. But this emergent stability also reflects an implicit social contract among the various scientists and policy specialists involved, which allows `the same? concept to accommodate tacitly different local meanings. Thus the very multidimensionality of such scientific concepts is part of their technical imprecision (which is more than just analytical lack of resolution); it is also the source of their resilience and value in bridging (and perhaps reorganizing) the differentiated social worlds typical of modern policy issues. The varying importance of particular dimensions of knowledge for different social groups may allow cohesion to be sustained amidst pluralism, and universality to coexist with cultural distinctiveness.

Customers Happy - homebasedbusiness

Starting a home enterprise is something that many want to do. Make sure to continue to gain knowledge to put yourself in the best position to succeed. Use the things that this article has gone over so that you have a work from home business that makes you money.

If your business requires lots of driving, be certain to keep gas and mileage records. Such expenses are fully deductible. But, you must be able to prove that your driving was a necessary part of the business.

TIP! One smart way to make some money in a home business is to offer lessons for something you know a lot about. People often prefer to take lessons from an individual that can be arranged around their schedules rather than having to adhere to schedules of a school.

Rather than purchasing a web server for use in your home business enterprise, economize by utilizing shared server space. That is virtual hosting, and if you only have a small business site that?s all you need. You generally won?t need a server unless you?re hosting a big forum or a lot of large files that get accessed often.

Prior to putting your funds and time into a online business, you need to have a plan. Make a business plan and have someone experienced go over it with you. Consultants are there to provide honest opinions. Start working on your plan if it is solid. As your business grows, you can begin to make changes.

If you?re an artistic person, you may be able to create a business that sells graphic designs. Several local businesses like working with freelance designers instead of larger companies since they get personalized service and more flexibility. That?s one place where you have a great advantage over larger companies.

TIP! You can use a receipt scanner in order to track your business expenses. There are lots of great ones out there, so read reviews to pick the one that fits you best.

In your online business, you should aim at spending 20% of your time on educating yourself, and the other 80% on actually doing things. ?Doing? is what makes money, so be sure you take whatever steps necessary to generate profits.

It?s important you have a schedule and follow through with it when running a home business. Otherwise, you?ll end up mixing work time with family time and never getting a break. Working constantly can cause burnout very quickly if you do not watch yourself. Maintaining a schedule can be difficult at first, but when friends and family understand your schedule, they will be more apt to leave you alone during your work time.

You need to know about conversion rates so you can apply that knowledge to your business niche. Using conversion strategies will help you determine the profitability of your business. The more you know about conversion and its rates, the more likely your business will achieve financial success.

TIP! You should obtain a post office box for all of your business mailings. Your home address is the worst address to use when doing business online.

Don?t do too much for your home business?s website like throw blinking graphics and animations all over it unless it has to do with your business. Flashy graphics should just cater to kids or parties. If your business is more low-key, retain that much excitement in your website.

When you work at home, you will need an office. You don?t need a big one, but it does have to be comfortable. Make your working area inviting so that you can feel inspired, productive, efficient and calm there. Use the space that you have for your office as efficiently as possible.

If you have a home business, make sure to hire a distinguished accountant. Make sure you have this information before beginning your business so you can track the expenses. Items like home work-spaces, and mileage can be written off, so keep track of these things.

TIP! Keep a record of all of your driving miles for your business. You can use this information for your taxes.

Always manage your financial records properly through accuracy and organization. If you ever find yourself audited, it will be necessary to prove your business expenses and income. These records can also give you a clear glimpse of how you are doing month to month.

Cash Flow

Join discussion groups and online forums for those with home businesses. Not only is this a great way to network with like-minded professionals, but it is another way to get your name and product out there to others. Who knows what could come from the contacts you make from these sites.

TIP! Consider diversifying your product offerings. Spend some time brainstorming various possibilities and work on finding a unique product or service that will benefit what you are currently selling.

Learn how to manage cash flow. Cash flow is crucial to manage, because it is the life blood of your business. Know what can wait and what you must pay now. Keep some cash on hand for any emergency, and only take out a loan if you know you can repay it.

If you need a business partner, be sure you choose someone that you can trust. While the immediate choice seems to be your spouse or partner, that is not always a smart idea. Selecting a good business partner can be tough be rewarding.

Come up with a name for your business that has meaning. Regardless of whether you have plans to set up your website yet, you should still buy the domain name immediately. Many times you can get a domain for under $10 per year, but it is important to reserve your domain before another person takes it. You may want to post a site with only one page until you decide if you want a complete website.

TIP! Even though you are the boss, you need to set a schedule to avoid slacking off. You have an obligation to your business, and you can?t let yourself get distracted because you are working from home.

Is your website able to sell product to customers? Many people these days like shopping online and you will lose a lot of profit if you don?t give them this option.

Knowing your audience is crucial to effective communication with them. This is very important for the home business enterprise owner because each dime must have a positive impact. Marketing efficiently is a great way to maximize profits. Know your audience well enough and you will know exactly where to spend each nickel and dime.

It can be easier than you think to start your own home business. There are lots of simple business models you can pick from that will save you tons of overhead on office locations or storefronts. Come up with a list of products or services that you would like to have in your community, and then figure out what starting one of those would entail.

TIP! When you need clients to come to your home office, you have to have business insurance. Your homeowner?s policy generally will not extend liability to business activities, while business insurance will provide coverage for your business machinery and furniture as well as providing liability coverage in case a client receives an injury on your property.

You should set up a backup plan just in case something goes wrong with your home based business. Having a plan for when a disaster can happen is important, like if you were to have a problem with your website. This will leave you with income at all times, even in the worst case scenario.

If you use the internet for your business, your internet service also qualifies as a tax deduction. You can get some of the price taken off from the earnings you get. You aren?t, however, going to be able to pay over half the price if you?re using it for other things that aren?t business related.

As far as tax deductions go when dealing with your business, it is vital to remember that while vacations do not qualify as a deduction, business trips do. These business trips are fully deductible, and your meals are 50 percent deductible.

Customers Happy

It is very important to keep your customers happy. You need a lot less effort to get repeat sales than new sales. Keep those customers happy, and they will return.

Creating a home business is fun but challenging to do. Starting a home business requires finding your niche market. Finding something that you already know about, or are interested in, can really help you to be successful. Research for a considerable amount of time before you throw all your eggs into one basket. Use networking tools to learn from others who have been successful with creating a home business.

TIP! Home businesses may be a good idea if you do not want to put your kids in daycare. You can take care of your own child while staying at home and earning money.

You must consider distractions that you might have to deal with inside your home when you?re running a business. Identify those things that create the most distraction so you can find solutions and become more productive.

You want to promote your home business as often as possible. Whenever you are conversing with folks, look for ways to talk about the business. Carry business cards with you everywhere and give them out during these opportunities.

Are you selling old or used books from your home business? Sites that sell used can be found everywhere on the Internet. You will often find yourself using more than one. Rank the sites by quality, usability and responsiveness. Do not think the prices on these sites are set in stone. You may pay a bit more for a site that has higher quality service.

TIP! To get more business from the Internet, the domain name that you choose is important. The name should be meaningful.

Give yourself work breaks so you get time to refresh and unwind. You should be dedicated to your business, but not to the exclusion of all other things in your life. Every person needs a break occasionally. It helps to recharge the batteries so you can tackle fresh challenges with a rested mind.

Take classes that are available. Since you?ve got a home business enterprise, a ton of money can?t be spent upfront, however, you can go to some local business courses that can help you achieve your goals. Learning can only help your business succeed.

To be successful with your home business, it is crucial that you?re aware of the amount you are spending to create a product. Typically, it?s wise to double the amount you paid to make the product when selling it. Some will charge triple the cost of production.

TIP! Choose a business that is close to your heart. Enthusiasm is always an essential part of success, and customers will notice this.

Ask people to knock or to call before they come rushing into your office about something. Fewer distractions means you can keep your attention on the important topics in front of you and better manage your company. You have to take your work from home business seriously.

Working at home is a type of goal many pursue. You need the right advice when pursuing this type of business. You are going to be headed to your dream when you use the tips presented here.

If you?re a home business owner, you may need liability insurance. You will find this important should you have clients visiting your home office. If you have a business related accident, or a customer has one at your home, you will then be covered for any liability.

Friar accused of abuse in 2 states kills self

(AP) ? A Franciscan friar accused of sexually abusing students at Catholic high schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania killed himself at a western Pennsylvania monastery, police said Saturday.

Brother Stephen Baker, 62, was found dead of self-inflicted wounds at the St. Bernardine Monastery in Hollidaysburg on Saturday morning, Blair Township Police Chief Roger White told the Associated Press. He declined to specify the type of wounds or say whether a note was found.

Baker was named in legal settlements last week involving 11 men who alleged that he sexually abused them at a Catholic high school in northeast Ohio three decades ago. The undisclosed financial settlements announced Jan. 16 involved his contact with students at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio from 1986-90.

The Youngstown diocese previously said it was unaware of the allegations until nearly 20 years after the alleged abuse.

"Let us continue to pray for all victims of abuse, for Brother Baker's family and the repose of his soul," Youngstown Bishop George Murray said in a statement Saturday.

After the settlements were announced, the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese in central Pennsylvania said it received complaints in 2011 of possible abuse by Baker at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Bishop McCort High School hired an attorney to investigate after several former students alleged they were molested by Baker in the 1990s. Attorney Susan Williams said three former students had talked to her in detail about the alleged abuse.

Baker taught and coached at John F. Kennedy High School in the late 1980's and early 1990's and was at Bishop McCort from 1992-2000.

Bishop Mark Bartchak of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese said in a statement that he was saddened by the news of Baker's death, but declined further comment citing pending legal action involving the diocese.

A message left for Father Patrick Quinn, the head of Baker's order, the Third Order Regular Franciscans, was not immediately returned.

Judy Jones, assistant Midwest director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said the organization still hopes people who know about other abuse allegations against Baker will continue to come forward.

"We feel sad for Br. Baker's family but even sadder for the dozens of boys who Baker assaulted," she said in a statement.

Parishioner wants prayer for bin Laden ? Prayer Request

According to Orlando Web Marketing guru?s at Get The Clicks, the most successful businesses are those who look at their markets and competition and take measurable steps towards becoming the best. Analyzing your competitors via a web marketing firm is one way businesses achieve this in Florida. Online advertising companies know how to help a business rise above their competition and stay there for the long term.

For many companies, seizing the opportunity to capitalize on their competitions obvious weaknesses while emulating their strengths is smart. While exploiting weaknesses may seem harsh, it is actually a bright business move that all companies should strive to do. In this day and age it is especially important to have a thorough online presence, and companies who do not are often at the mercy of their competitors who are.

Success in the often cut throat. In the business marketplace today, it truly lies with having a strong and recognizable online presence. Companies who see that their competition has a poorly designed website, no social media presence, or lack of online promotions are often quick to take advantage.

Doing so will let them and draw competitors? customers their way. To be able to see how the competition is doing online overall, many businesses have a competitive analysis done. Contact a good Internet Marketing Service and help your company today.

This type of analysis is done in several ways. The first sees companies putting together a list of their closest competition, including their website addresses. Second, research is done to see what common keywords that company is placing on their site and in what order and quantity. Finally, the websites of the competition are reviews for design flaws, errors, and strengths.

Additional steps include identifying the competitions advertisers, back links, search trends, recommendations, and social media presence. While having a well designed and detailed website goes a long way to helping a business succeed, if they do not have a presence in other realms, such as social media, they are missing out on a big segment of the market. Social media and networking helps businesses reach out to their client base in multiple ways and saturate the market with their name, products, and services.

Many consumers today no longer commit themselves to one brand merely based on past history. They are much more likely to try brands who have reached out to them through different social networking mediums. This is often done through ad placement, promoted posts, and targeted sales and discounts and businesses who do not participate in these things are guaranteed to lose customers to their competition who do it.

It is common for shoppers today to forgo brand loyalty and instead go with products and services which reach out to them through the internet. This is often done through ad placement, promotions, and giveaways. Companies can do this themselves by getting help with analyzing your competitors via an Orlando Web Marketing firm such as Get The Clicks.
