Holistic medicine is not just for humans.

It?s a new profit center for local veterinarians who are finding that horses, dogs, cats, rabbits and even birds can benefit from acupuncture, massage therapy and herbal remedies.

?It is my strong belief that integrated medicine serves our companion animals best, so?I collaborate with primary care veterinarians closely,? said Dr. Reiko Tran of Pearl Veterinary Holistic Medicine in Manassas.

Tran has practiced conventional medicine for more than 15 years, and is certified in veterinary acupuncture, Tui-Na (Chinese massage) and veterinary Chinese herbal medicine by Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Her dedication has led to many local referrals since she opened Pearl Holistic Medicine in 2008.

??For example, in cases of disk disease, where decompression surgery is considered the primary treatment option, acupuncture can be used when surgery is not applicable, or to speed up recovery after surgery,? Tran said. ?Acupuncture helps to enhance the companion animal?s own healing ability, and Chinese herbal remedy will assist it.?

Tran is not alone in her new-age healing practices. A quick phone survey of 26 veterinary hospitals, practices and mobile clinics from Bristow to Woodbridge turned up five other doctors of veterinary medicine who have added holistic tools to their trade:? Dr. Toni Connell of Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic in Manassas; Dr. Robert S. (Scott) Dove of Companion Animal Clinic in Gainesville; Dr. Christine Learman of Maple Shade Animal Hospital in Dale City and Dr. Edith Verloop and Dr. Samantha Scher of Prince William Animal Hospital in Manassas.

Connell made the business decision to add acupuncture for her canine and feline patients in 2004.

?A patient I referred to a holistic practitioner came back and said the approach worked really well,? Connell said. ?That?s when I decided that I needed to open up my mind, and if I really wanted to help my patients I would have to learn more.?

Since then, referrals for her acupuncture services have increased, along with positive client feedback. Certification also increased her career satisfaction.

?When you pursue those interests that are on your horizon, it makes your professional workday that much happier,? added Connell, who is seeking additional holistic certifications.

Dove, owner of Companion Animal Clinic in Gainesville, made chiropractic and acupuncture tools part of his Rappahannock County farm and Prince William County clinic practices more than three decades ago.?

And for Dove, it?s not just about alleviating the discomforts of aging animals. He also breeds dogs and horses for show.

?Holistic medicine goes quite well with wellness and prevention therapy,? explained Dove. ?For instance, if you have a working dog ? obedience, guard duty, shift work, agility or racing ? you use those modalities just like a human athlete would; same for racing horses, jumpers or hunters. You want to keep them as fit and comfortable as possible, so they enjoy their job and do it well.??

One of Dove?s most famous acupuncture patients, six-year-old Scottish deerhound Hickory, brought home America?s top dog award ? Best in Show ? from the Westminster Kennel Club?s annual dog show at New York?s Madison Square Garden in 2011.

?When I start massage therapy or get the acupuncture needles out, Hickory and my other dogs all line up because they want a turn,? said Dove, who also is Hickory?s co-owner. ?It?s low-force, light-touch work that increases mobility, comfort and other skill systems. It improves their whole body tone and as long as you have proper diet and good exercise, you?ve got healthy dogs.?

?Every doc ought to have some training in it, at least to know when to make referrals,? Dove added. ?I think the fact that I do offer it, takes my business one more step.?
