Extreme Sports: Snowboard! Outdoor Recreation Snowboarding Joy ...

Reviewed with Pamela Pollack?s Ski!.

Gr. 9-12. Sharp, action-packed photos and punchy, magazine-style prose add to the appeal of these small, square titles in the Extreme Sports series. Chapters are brief but packed with information for beginners, introducing various styles of skiing and snowboarding; equipment and techniques; tips on training; and useful resources. Most of this is material that?s frequently covered in well-written sports magazine articles; but teens will appreciate having a basic, approachable overview all in one place, written in colloquial language (a chapter called ?Get Psyched,? for example). They will also like the insider sidebars such as the glossary of snow terminology in Ski! (?champagne powder? vs. ?mashed potatoes?) and Snowboard!?s list of cool moves (?McTwist? vs. the ?Pop Tart?). Relaxed, readable, and filled with helpful information, these are introductions for any teen collection where such materials are in demand. Gillian Engberg

They also learn the moves (ever want to do a stalemasky?) and what the life of a serious competitor is like. In addition, there are tips from the pros, profiles of legendary competitors, and plenty of warnings (Don?t board that avalanche!) We are publishing board to coincide with the Winter Olympics and the Winter X Games.

Extreme Sports: In Search of the Ultimate Thrill

Adult/High SchoolIf the words ?extreme sports? bring to mind only the basics like skateboarding and snowboarding, think again. Here, sports range all the way to ?mega-extreme? sports such as sky flying, caving, and free-diving. The book is divided into categories of air, land, and water, each of which profiles a variety of sports from the everyday to the almost totally unfamiliar. Each entry ranges from 2 to 10 pages and recounts the history of the sport as well as some of the greats who have competed. When appropriate, hints are given for how to participate locally. But this book isn?t a ?How to? as much as a ?How can it be?? In many of the entries, the basic physics of the sport are briefly explainedhow a bungee cord works, for example, or why innovations such as lighter metals helped advance biking sports. Rather than this brief text, however, it?s the action photography that?s the book?s real attraction. Each spread has multiple full-color photographs. Reluctant readers will be drawn in by the pictures and teachers can also find classroom connections for the physics, invention, and engineering that keep these sports ever extreme.Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

Pushing the limits.

Extreme sports vigorously test the limits of an individual?s strength, agility, and courage. One?s adversary in these sports is not another athlete but the forces of nature, particularly gravity.

Extreme Sports celebrates the wild world of high adrenaline sports with concise profiles of forty-one sports. The sports range from bungee jumping to whitewater rafting. Each sport is described with lively text and illustrated with dynamic action photography.

The sports featured in Extreme Sports are organized alphabetically in three major sections: Nine Air Sports: BASE jumping, ballooning, hang gliding, sky diving, sky surfing, etc.
Seventeen Land Sports: Ice climbing, ice yachting, mountain boarding, skateboarding, street luge, etc.
Fifteen Water Sports: Jetskiing, power boating, snorkeling, wakeboarding, windsurfing, etc.

Extreme Sports also features less known sports, such as freediving: a sport that requires participants to swim into the deepest reaches of the ocean carrying only the air they hold in their lungs. Freedivers have pushed the limits of unassisted breathing dives to go below 400 feet. The book includes an extensive list of books, magazines, associations and clubs that would-be extreme athletes can contact to obtain more information for each sport.

Although participating in extreme sports is clearly not for every sports enthusiast, Extreme Sports is.
