This picture appeared in the January 1906 issue of the "Out West" magazine, edited by Charles F. Lummis. It says, "Jonathan Sayre Slauson, president of the Southwest Society in its first and second years, and at the second annual meeting elected president emeritus, died December 27, 1905.

"For the first time, perhaps, in the history of Los Angeles, public business was suspended in memory of a private citizen, and his body lay in state in the City Hall."

The Southwest Society, affiliated with the Archaeological Institute of America, was the organization that founded and built the Southwest Museum.

Jonathan Sayre Slauson was born in New York State in 1829 and became a lawyer.

In 1864, health problems led him to change location and he came west to Austin, Nevada. Here he was in both mining and law, and was mayor three times.

Slauson seems to have made a lot of money in Nevada. He went to San Francisco for a few years and then to Los Angeles in 1874.

Slauson founded the Los Angeles County Bank in Los Angeles, managed it for 10 years and when he sold it, it was said to be one of the strongest banks in the state.

He is remembered today by Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles, but also by the City of Azusa and by his pioneering in the citrus industry. One report says he acquired the Azusa Ranch and the San Jose Addition ranch, a total of 13,600 acres. He sold off some and incorporated the Azusa Land and Water Company.

During the "Boom of the Eighties" he laid out the town of Azusa and in a rush, half the town lots were sold in the first three days. On the land he retained, he planted oranges and lemons and had his own packing and shipping plant.

In Los Angeles Slauson helped churches, helped fund orphanages, the Y.M.C.A. and the Salvation Army Rescue Home, and funded a monument honoring veterans of the Spanish-American war.

A resolution by the executive committee said, "The Southwest Society will carry forever in the head of its roster the honored name of its president emeritus; and in its enduring work for this community, will always keep his memory in loving remembrance."
